  • Counselling and Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is primarily a talk-based treatment approach and is intended to help people improve and maintain their mental health and well-being. Registered Psychotherapists work with individuals, couples, and families in individual and group settings. In Ontario, Psychotherapy occurs when the Registered Psychotherapist (RP) and client enter into a psychotherapeutic relationship where both works together to bring about positive change in the client’s thinking, feeling, behaviour, and social functioning. Individuals usually seek psychotherapy when they have thoughts, feelings, moods, and behaviours that are adversely affecting their day-to-day lives, relationships, and the ability to enjoy life.

Thus, Psychotherapy involves treatment, by means of psychotherapy technique, delivered through a therapeutic relationship, intended to treat an individual’s serious disorder of thought, cognition, mood, emotional regulation, perception or memory that may seriously impair the individual’s judgement, insight, behaviour, communication or social functioning.

    Counselling and Psychotherapy

According to the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), counselling and psychotherapy involve the skilled and principled use of relationship to facilitate self-knowledge, emotional acceptance and growth and the optimal development of personal resources. The overall aim is to provide an opportunity for people to work towards living more satisfyingly and resourceful.

Counselling is generally used to denote a relatively brief treatment that is focussed on behaviour. It often targets a particular symptom or problematic situation and offers suggestions and advice for dealing with it.

Psychotherapy on the other hand is generally a long-term treatment that focuses more on gaining insight into chronic physical and emotional problems. Its focus is on the person’s thought processes and how these may be influenced by past events such that they cause problems in the present.

In sum, psychotherapy addresses the root cause and core issues of current problems so that lasting change and personal growth may occur.

There are several different types of therapies that fall under the general heading of psychotherapy, including approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, psychoanalytic psychotherapy, and solution focussed therapy.

At C2C psychotherapy and Counselling, our psychotherapists are trained in a variety of treatment approaches and are registered and regulated to perform psychotherapy in Ontario, Canada.
