Busted! Don’t Believe These Psychological Myths!
Much of what you know about psychology may be a lie. Over the last several decades, popular psychology has led to the rise of dozens of myths that have given people a false sense of understanding about how their brains operate and how to interpret the behaviors of those around them. Dispelling myths about psychology and mental health can help break the stigma and create a culture that encourages people of any age to seek support when they need it.
To help you steer clear of these misconceptions, C2C Psychotherapy & Counselling has debunked some of the most widely believed psychological myths.
Myth 1: Mental health issues are taboo and bring shame to people
Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, the statement above was false. Today, the statement is further from the truth than it has ever been. It only exists because of old beliefs and a lack of awareness of mental health issues. Mental health disorders are illnesses, not signs of poor character. Similarly, people with, for instance, depression cannot “snap out of it” any more than someone with diabetes or psoriasis can immediately recover from their condition. Mental health conditions are common, but treatment is available. We must all work together to remove the myths and stigma attached to mental disorders.
Myth 2: I don’t need help
Many times people fail to take proper treatment through diagnosis and therapeutic interventions. They make this mistake because of a lack of awareness which can be fixed by reaching out for help and seeking therapy from certified and registered Psychotherapists. Our business can help treat various mental health issues by using various evidence-based modalities to overcome these challenges.
Myth 3: A mental health condition is a sign of weakness
A mental health condition has nothing to do with being weak or lacking willpower. It is not a condition people choose to have or not have. In fact, recognizing the need to accept help for a mental health condition requires great strength and courage. Anyone can develop a mental health condition.
